Latin American Integration in a Turbulent World

Tuesday, February 21, 2017, 3:00-4:30 PM
Inter-American Dialogue (1155 15th St NW Suite 800, Washington, DC 20005)

After the election of Donald Trump in the US, the Brexit vote, political troubles in the eurozone, and the collapse of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Latin America faces an unstable and chaotic global landscape. In this moment of uncertainty, what are the prospects for a renewed regional agenda focused on trade and cooperation? Can Mercosur and the Pacific Alliance overcome their respective structural limitations to work together? What role does China play as US influence diminishes even further? Can regional leaders collaborate to face many pending, pressing challenges, including the crisis in Venezuela? In light of the rapidly changing context, do “Latin America” and “South America” still make sense as economic and political units?

The Dialogue is pleased to host an open discussion about this new and uncertain landscape and the possibilities for integration in Latin America.
