Meditation is an ancient practice that provides many benefits to physical and mental health since it reduces stress, decreases anxiety and depression, improves sleep, promotes mental and emotional health as well as the development of emotional intelligence.
If you are interested in learning to meditate, the Retirees Association will offer all its members a live introductory workshop on the practice of meditation on Thursday July 22 at 11 a.m. Washington DC time. The workshop will discuss the theory and provide the tools necessary to meditate. The workshop will be held in Spanish, by Sara Atala and Guillermo Stilstein and will last approximately an hour and a half with time for questions and answers.
Sara Atala has been practicing meditation for over 40 years. She is a faculty member of the International PATHWORK Foundation, in the United States, where she gives courses on emotional and spiritual growth. She is certified in Clinical Hypnotherapy and is a master in Neuro Linguistic Programming from the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners. She is a coach, with an emphasis on mindfulness, and has been leading workshops on personal growth and meditation in McLean, Va. since 2001. She has volunteered as a mentor and instructor in emotion management skills (which includes meditation practice and stress management) to inmates at the Adult Detention Center in Fairfax, Va. To date, she has instructed 900 inmates. In 2015, she was selected as the Fairfax County Volunteer of the Year, in recognition of her work.
Guillermo Stilstein has practiced martial arts and Taoist meditation for over 30 years. He is a member of the Zen Buddhist sangha called Southern Winds in Argentina, and has been studying Zen Buddhism for over 40 years. Guillermo is an instructor at the Argentine Medical Institute of Acupuncture and the Group Research Institute, where he teaches Chi Kung (energy training). He has been the director of studies in General and Ericksonian Hypnosis at the American Institute for Training and Research (IAFI) for eight years and is founder of an electronic dojo for the practice of meditation for four years.
