Dear Members,
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Jorge Elena on September 4.
A more thorough obituary will follow in the near future, but we want to take this moment to reflect on what he meant to those of us who worked most closely with him over the latter part of his career and as a retiree, including his service as a member of the Retirees’ Association.
After serving for many years as Secretary of the Board of Directors, a critical role in the leadership of the Bank’s administration, Jorge went on to represent the Bank in Europe, Brazil and Argentina. The Association’s Chapters responded immediately with expressions of great appreciation for what Jorge had meant to them, and deep sorrow over his passing. One recognized his important contribution to a change in the bylaws of the Association to provide for the election of two Board Directors from among residents outside the United States, thus strengthening the representativeness of our Association as a regional organization. Another wrote, “I knew Jorge since the early 1980’s. I remember him as a professional of the first class and a colleague dedicated to the development and wellbeing of our countries.” And yet another remembered that as a Representative in his country, Jorge “brought with him a high level of professionalism, knowledge, sensitivity, education and nobility. He left a legacy as a great boss. I am profoundly sad over the death of one of the most valorous men I ever knew.” And finally, “un caballero a carta cabal,” a true gentleman.
And by his side was Elena, who supported and enabled the man he was. We feel deeply for her loss and ours, and stand by her as members of the family of which Jorge was so much an important part. Condolences can be sent to Elena at jelena@fibertel.com.ar or to the following address: Av. Ortiz de Ocampo, 2820 P-3, Buenos Aire, 1425- Argentina.
